Rishi Sunak at Richmond Bike Park site

Rishi visited the site of Richmond Bike Park to hear how local volunteers are turning an ambitious community project into reality.

He toured the site with members of Richmond Bike Park Committee, Richmond Yorkshire CIC, volunteers and contractors, hearing how the project has grown from an initial idea into a development backed by hundreds of local people and businesses.

The project was first proposed by local resident Louise Raine after being inspired by a similar facility elsewhere in Yorkshire.

Since then, the group has raised more than £250,000 through grants, fundraising events, donations and in-kind support from local businesses.

Work began in April this year, with volunteers helping prepare the site through community dig days before specialist contractors moved on site.

Specialist contractor Velosolutions is leading the construction of the trails and pump track. The company has delivered cycling facilities across the UK and internationally, working with communities, local authorities and sporting venues to create purpose-built riding destinations.

The project is being delivered in phases, with hopes that at least one trail will be open later this year while work continues across the wider site.

During the visit, Rishi heard how the group has secured support from a variety of organisations including Sport England, National Highways and the National Lottery Awards for All programme, alongside dozens of smaller fundraising efforts organised by local supporters.

Rishi also heard about plans for a small café and a bike library, allowing riders who do not own a bike to borrow one and make use of the facility.

Organisers hope to hold a soft opening later this year, with an official opening planned for spring next year.

Rishi said:

“What has impressed me most about Richmond Bike Park is the determination of the people behind it. This is a project that has been driven by volunteers, supported by local businesses and backed by the wider community.

“It is fantastic to see the progress that has been made and the commitment people have shown to creating a facility that will benefit local residents and visitors for years to come.”

Louise Raine said:

“It has been a truly heartwarming journey, and our volunteers were delighted to welcome Rishi Sunak to the site last week, giving him a tour and explaining the far-reaching benefits the project will bring for local people.”
