Rishi says the new school built in Catterick Village is a great environment for learning.
The MP was impressed by the new Michael Syddall Church of England (Aided) Primary School.
Pupils moved into the new building just a couple of weeks ago. The old school buildings will now be demolished and become the school’s playing fields.
The new school has been built under the Government’s School Rebuilding Programme. The funding was approved during Rishi’s time in Government.
During his visit, Rishi met staff and pupils in the new classrooms with headteacher Alison McHarg and members of the construction team from the builders Bowmer + Kirkland.
He joined a music class, an art class and a Year 6 reading class. Rishi spoke about the importance of reading, urging pupils to read as much as possible to help with all their schoolwork, not just English.
He said: “The new school is clearly an inspiring place for the pupils and the staff and everyone I spoke to felt good about their new surroundings.
“There was an energy about the place that I am sure will be reflected in the children’s experience and the staff’s ability to deliver a first-class education.”
Mrs McHarg said: “The pupils were so excited and proud to show Rishi our new school, the classrooms, provision, and outdoor spaces.
“It has been a long journey from the start of this project to our new school today, with some challenges along the way. But it has been worth the wait.
“The purpose-built classrooms provide our pupils with inspiring and engaging learning environments that will support and enhance all learning opportunities.
“We have been delighted to see our vision become a reality, creating a school community where every child can thrive, achieve, and feel proud of their surroundings.
North Yorkshire Council’s executive member for education, learning and skills, Cllr Annabel Wilkinson, said: “I am very pleased that the school rebuild project is complete. This represents a significant investment in the future of our children, providing them with an improved and inspiring learning environment.
“The modern facilities, including the new car park and playing fields, will make a real difference to pupils, staff and families.
“This investment gives children an excellent environment to learn, play and thrive and it’s encouraging to see the school growing to meet the needs of the community.”
