Rishi spoke of the importance of numeracy after taking part in a primary school maths class.

Rishi helped to deliver a maths lesson at Brompton on Swale CE Primary School where pupils were working on times tables, fractions and whole-number division.

Rishi commended the teaching staff for their dedication to making maths both fun and relevant and the school’s recent results which saw 100 pc of pupils reach the required national standard.

Rishi: “Maths is such a crucial part of everyday life and for the careers of the future. Ensuring we provide pupils with the right skills gives them the best opportunity to succeed.

“The staff are doing a great job to make maths fun for the children and the school’s results in the subject show how effective their teaching is.”

During his visit to the school, accompanied by his wife Akshata, Rishi also joined an art class.

Pupils worked enthusiastically on drawing and self-portrait activities. Rishi took time to speak to the children about their creative work and praised the school’s efforts to nurture imagination alongside academic achievement.

The visit concluded with a Q&A session with the School Council, made up of pupils from mixed year groups. The council members confidently shared their ideas for school improvement, which included a healthy snack bar of fruits and vegetables to help educate students on nutritional eating.

Rishi described the session as a "heartening reminder of the ambition and potential of young people when given the right opportunities and encouragement."

Adam Firmin, Headteacher, said: “The children really enjoyed the visit from Mr and Mrs Sunak. They were very excited to learn some maths together in the classroom and the school council asked some good questions of the former prime minister, which he answered very well, linking some of the challenges he faced to having resilience and courage which is part of our own school vision.”

Rishi previously visited the school in 2017 to open its Busy Bees pre-school department.
