Rishi Sunak at Catterick Races with James Sanderson, the course's executive director

Rishi has opened the latest development at Catterick Racecourse.

The Richmond and Northallerton MP cut the ribbon to officially open the Horseshoe Café Bar – a £1.1m investment in modern facilities for racegoers.

An existing bar adjacent to the parade ring area has been extended and refurbished to create a new open-plan contemporary bar and servery open to all racegoers.

It brings the total investment at Catterick to more than £5m over six years. Other recent developments include a new entrance/reception and the Dales Stand, which Mr Sunak opened in 2021.

Catterick Racecourse executive director James Sanderson said: “The new Café Bar is a fantastic reconfiguration of what had become a rather dated and, dare I say, ‘unloved’ part of the Racecourse.”

“This latest investment has delivered modern and comfortable facilities for our racegoers to enjoy for many years to come, while also retaining the charm and character of Catterick Racecourse, which we all value so much.

“We were delighted that Mr Sunak, a great supporter of the racing industry in North Yorkshire, could return to see what we have achieved and hear about our plans for future investment.”

Rishi congratulated Mr Sanderson and his team for the latest investment in facilities at the course.

He added: “It’s great to see the racecourse go from strength to strength. Racing is an important industry in North Yorkshire and the UK as a whole and it is encouraging to see this investment at Catterick providing the modern facilities today’s racegoers expect while also keeping its essential character.”

Rishi and his family attended the first meeting of 2025 on New Year’s Day. The next meeting is on Thursday, January 9, featuring the North Yorkshire Grand National.
