Rishi raised the importance of the UK's food security, urging the government to maintain transparency and publish the annual Food Security Index.
The UK Food Security Index is a crucial tool for evaluating the UK's resilience in ensuring a steady and sustainable food supply amidst global uncertainties and geopolitical challenges.
In the House of Commons, Rishi said: "In our increasingly volatile world, I am sure the Secretary of State will agree that food security is of growing importance to our national resilience, so I hope he can commit the new government to continue publishing the annual Food Security Index, with the next update coming at next year's Farm to Fork Summit."
In response, the Secretary of State Steve Reed acknowledged the importance of transparency, stating: “We are reviewing the data that we can publish. We want to be as open and transparent as possible. I think that is good for the sector. It is good for scrutiny, but we will announce in due course precisely how that will operate.”
Rishi’s call comes amid growing concerns over global supply chain disruptions and environmental pressures on food production. The UK Food Security Index was published for the first time earlier this year – an initiative of the previous Government.
