Rishi Sunak at Le Cateau Primary School

Rishi saw talented youngsters perform their winning routines during his visit to a Catterick Garrison primary school.

The MP watched the final stages of the annual talent show at Le Cateau Community Primary School and presented the prizes to the winners.

Top spot went to Josua Souvi (correct) who sang a traditional Fijian song accompanied by his mother Kinisimere (correct) and received a standing ovation from his schoolmates, staff and Mr Sunak.

He was also greeted by the Service Children’s Community Choir, which is based at the school, who sang to him on arrival and departure.

The choir was formed in 2021 to support the mental health of Service children through music.

Rishi said he found the talent on display very impressive.

“Everybody gave of their best and there was such a supportive atmosphere for Josua and all his fellow contestants.” He added: “It is clearly such a strong and supportive school community.”

During the visit to the school, where 68 per cent of the pupils are children of Service parents and represent 22 different nationalities, he spoke to the staff and governors about the challenges of running a Garrison school with so many children who, because of parents’ postings, may have had disrupted early years learning.

Headteacher Ian Mottram said: “We very much enjoyed having Rishi come to Le Cateau to see what our pupils can do and for my team to explain how we endeavour to give them the best opportunities to thrive despite the unique circumstances they face because of their parents serving the country.”

Mr Mottram said the Service Children’s Community Choir played an important role in providing a supportive focus for pupils at Le Cateau and other schools on the Garrison who might be struggling because of, for example, a parent’s deployment.

Despite being formed only two years ago by Le Cateau staff member Angela Campbell, the choir has appeared on the Britain’s Got Talent TV talent show and had the opportunity to record at the famous Abbey Road Studios in London.

After hearing them sing at the end of his visit, Rishi said: “They sounded absolutely beautiful.”
