Rishi joined pupils to celebrate improvements to outdoor learning at Bainbridge Church of England Primary School.

He took to the school’s new climbing frames, joined in activities in the Forest School and watched the school’s young cyclists demonstrate their prowess in the playground.

He also took part in an outdoor Q&A session with the pupils answering questions about his work in Westminster, at home in North Yorkshire and his favourite children’s books (Roald Dahl) and hobbies (walking, reading and movies).

Asked if he had any pets, he also revealed the imminent arrival of a Fox Red Labrador puppy and his family’s excitement about it.

Charlotte Harper, executive headteacher of the Bainbridge, Askrigg and West Burton Federation of schools, said the school had taken the decision to develop their outdoor learning area as part of a wider focus on the importance of early years physical education.

The range of outdoor facilities enabled their early years foundation stage and Year 1 pupils to enjoy a broad and challenging range of experiences to help develop their motor skills and life skills

She said: “The new climbing frame is the latest addition to our outdoor facilities and it was great to see Rishi joining the children on the new equipment.

“He related so well to all the pupils and they really enjoyed meeting him and finding out about his work here in North Yorkshire and in Westminster.”

Rishi said: “The children live in the wonderful environment of the Dales which makes a fabulous outdoor classroom, so spending more time learning in and about that environment has to be applauded.

“The school now has fantastic facilities for this, enabling its pupils to develop their physical and practical skills and to learn about nature.”
