A NORTH Yorkshire village fete was opened by Richmond MP Rishi Sunak.

Mr Sunak performed the opening honours on the village playing field at Scruton, near Northallerton, before touring the field to see the attractions and varied stalls.

These included displays of classic/vintage vehicles and agricultural equipment organised by Graham Bourne, a replica two thirds-scale Spitfire fighter brought to the event by owner Alan Harpley and a Bristol Hercules aero engine which was fired up twice during the afternoon.

There were also a host of other stalls, including books, bric-a-brac, burgers, tombola, toys and cakes. Cream teas were served in a marquee and music was provided by the Steel String Band.

Mr Sunak said: “This was a super community event and very well organised. I received a lovely welcome and it was great to meet so many villagers.”

Proceeds from the fete – more than £4,600, at least a ten per cent increase on last year’s total – are to be split between St Radegund’s Church and the village playing field association.
