I spent the morning at an engaging conference organised by Richmondshire District Council and the Yorkshire Post at Tenants Auction House in Leyburn. The theme was about how to keep young families in rural areas.

The two key takeaways for me were the importance of having affordable homes for young people to either buy or rent, and good employment opportunities which meant creating an environment where small companies can prosper.

A real highlight for me was meeting Amanda Owen, otherwise known as the Yorkshire Shepherdess, whose book I am currently reading! The presentation by Emily Nicholas, ex Youth Council Chairman, was lively, engaging and a real call-to-action to end the Conference.

I spoke to many people about my experience working both with schools and extensively with small businesses, key ingredients in ensuring young people have the opportunities they need.
