Rishi helped a local business with its annual festive charity fundraising effort.

He visited Whitegates Nursery to help prepare Christmas trees which are sold with a proportion of the sale proceeds being given to a local cancer charity.

This year Whitegates, at West Rounton, near Northallerton, is donating £1 from every tree sold to Butterwick Hospice Care.

During his visit, Rishi also met staff in the nursery’s café and helped serve customers.

Jon Grainge, the owner of Whitegates Nursery with his wife Claire, said Rishi’s visit had been a boost for staff and customers.

“We very much enjoyed having Rishi return to Whitegates where he has been a valued customer for many years,” Mr Grainge said.

“We updated him on the expansion of the business in recent years, particularly the café, and he saw our Christmas campaign in full swing.”

He added: “We grow the vast majority of the trees we sell and every year we select a local charity to benefit from their sale.”

Rishi said he was delighted to see an expanding local business giving something back to a local charity.

He said: “This is a great family business doing well and making a difference to benefit a much-loved cancer charity in the true spirit of Christmas.”

Among the staff Rishi met was Amy Wilson who works in the Whitegates cafe. Last month she was judged to be the Northern Skills Catering Apprentice of the Year. Rishi congratulated Amy on her success and Whitegates on providing her with the apprenticeship opportunity.
