Rishi Sunak at Hawes Primary School

Rishi took time out from his busy Westminster schedule to visit an improving primary school and play some cricket.

He called at Hawes Primary School to meet pupils and staff and while he was there joined in a Year 6 game of cricket, striking a couple of firm drives and doing some bowling too.

He also spent time answering pupils’ questions about his work as Chancellor of the Exchequer.

Headteacher Hanna Vasey showed him round the school, which has just received national funding for repairs to its building, and explained how the school had coped through the height of the coronavirus pandemic, starting with providing places for the children of key workers.

Before the end of term all year groups had returned to school to some extent and every pupil had been offered the opportunity for some face-to-face time with teachers. Ms Vasey said the school was well prepared for the September return.

Rishi said it was good to see the school doing so well. It was recently judged to be a Good school by Ofsted after a period in special measures.

“The school has played an important role during the crisis and is well set for the start of the Autumn term,” he said.

“Answering the pupils’ questions was good fun, as was the chance to play one of my favourite sports. The school has some very good cricketers!”

Miss Vasey said: “We were very grateful that Mr Sunak found time to come to our school when he is incredibly busy, keeping a promise he made to us earlier this year to visit. The children loved having him here.”
