Rishi is supporting a 175-year-old moorland cricket club’s plans for a new pavilion.
Chop Gate Cricket Club, founded in 1850 in the heart of the North York Moors, wants to build a new pavilion to replace the current facilities created out an of old portacabin.
This would provide essential amenities for both players and spectators, helping the club expand and improve the overall experience for everyone involved.
In 2024, the club faced significant challenges when severe flooding rendered the playing field unusable.
However, the club raised funds to install drainage, ensuring the grounds was restored and accessible once again. The community’s determination ensured the club could continue its activities, despite the setbacks.
During this difficult period, Ingleby Greenhow Cricket Club generously let the club to use their facilities, allowing Chop Gate Cricket Club to continue playing.
Rishi was greeted by Vicky Weall, club secretary, and Mark Weall, chairman, who are committed to improving the facilities for future generations of players.
The club’s ground has breathtaking views over the North York Moors, offering a unique setting for the club’s members and visitors.
Rishi took time to appreciate the beautiful surroundings before participating in a short game of cricket with club members.
Rishi said: “Chop Gate Cricket Club has a long and proud history, and it’s fantastic to see the dedication of the Weall family. The location of the club is truly breathtaking, with stunning views of the North York Moors. Supporting local sports clubs is crucial for strengthening communities, and I’m proud to support their plans for the future.”
Rishi is working with the club to find sources of funding to progress the pavilion plans.
Mark Weall, chairman of Chop Gate Cricket Club, added: “Last season was incredibly difficult for our club, but with the support from the local council and UHire we were able to undertake the necessary works to our drainage system”.
“We were delighted when Rishi came along to listen to our plans. We want to thank Rishi for his words of encouragement and support as we look forward to raising funds to build facilities that will help our village and keep the club going for decades to come.”
