Rishi Sunak at Northallerton Veterans Breakfast Club
Rishi joined Armed Forces veterans over breakfast in Northallerton at the start of the General election to discuss the nation’s security. The Prime Minister, who is the Conservative parliamentary candidate for Richmond and Northallerton, joined the Northallerton Armed Forces and Veterans Breakfast Club. In the Buck Inn on the High Street, he said growing threats around the world had led him to commit to increasing the UK’s spending on defence to 2.5 per cent of GDP by 2030. He said: “We face an increasingly challenging world and we must do more to defend our country, our interests and our values. “I very much enjoyed meeting former and current members of our Armed Forces who have already made sacrifices to keep our country safe. The club is a great place for them to meet regularly for comradeship and support.” Michael Crisp, organiser of the Northallerton club, said: “Members were delighted to have the chance to chat to the Prime Minister. It was a real boost for our club which is only two years old.” Among the veterans he met was Chris Hill, who recently opened the Fortunate Son Coffee Company, a coffee shop in Regency Mews, just off the High Street. The club will meet there for the first time this Saturday (June 1) at 9am The Northallerton club is one more than 500 around the world. Their purpose is to help Veterans and serving Armed Forces personnel to meet face to face in a relaxed environment to enjoy breakfast and banter, to combat loneliness. The clubs are free to attend and free to join. Mr Sunak has previously visited clubs at Colburn, Catterick Garrison and Richmond.
