Rishi Sunak at the Dales Centre Bedale

Rishi joined staff and volunteers as they prepared to re-open a community lifeline for the elderly in Bedale.

He called in at the Dales Centre as it was readied to welcome its clients back after the relaxation of Covid-19 restrictions.

Rishi lent a hand sanitising tables ahead of the resumption of the centre’s twice-weekly lunch gatherings.

Dales Centre Trustee Anne Gregg said the staff and volunteers were excited about welcoming back their Dales Centre regulars.

She added that the Covid-19 closure had provided the opportunity to carry out refurbishment to the centre, particularly its kitchen.

Rishi said the centre was looking good. “I know from a previous visit how popular and valued the gatherings are with elderly people who enjoy the food and the companionship. That’s more important than ever after the last 15 months when many people have experienced isolation.

“After the refurbishment work the centre is looking splendid and I congratulate everyone involved in that and in getting it ready to continue the great work supporting the elderly and vulnerable in the Bedale district.”

Mrs Gregg said Rishi’s visit was much appreciated. “The staff and volunteers are thrilled to be back and our MP’s visit and thanks meant a lot to them.”

She added that because of continuing social distancing requirements the capacity of the centre was limited to around 35. However, when allowed the centre would welcome new clients to the Tuesday and Thursday get-togethers.

Older people interested in attending the centre when a further relaxation of Covid-19 restrictions allow larger numbers to be accommodated should contact 01677 425806; [email protected] or call in at the centre on Tuesdays or Thursdays between 10am-2pm.
