Rishi joined the celebrations as Wensleydale’s women’s rugby team savoured their triumph in a national cup competition.
The Wensleydale Heifers beat Cheshunt 29-15 in the National Junior Plate Final held in Coventry, an historic milestone for the team which was only formed in 2020. The cup triumph was combined with a second-place finish in the league.
Rishi congratulated the team on their success at an event held at the club in Leyburn, presenting them with the trophy and taking part in a celebration in the clubhouse and on the pitch.
He said: “It’s been great to witness their progress after only six years and it’s a tribute to the players and their coaches for their hard work over the season.”
Rishi was also asked to formally open the club’s new balcony viewing area, which has great views of the club’s pitches with Pen Hill as a background.
The balcony is the latest improvement to the Cawkill Park clubhouse. A major extension and upgrading of the clubhouse was opened in 2019. There has also been investment in the club’s pitches.
Rishi said: “Wensleydale RUFC is now a great place to both play and watch rugby. It’s good to see success both on and off the pitch.”
Chris Taylor, club chair, said players and members always enjoyed having Mr Sunak at the club.
Presenting him with a life member’s shirt, Mr Taylor said: “Rishi has always backed Wensleydale RUFC and we appreciate his support over many years as we have endeavoured to build the club and involve more people from across the local community.
“The development of the Heifers has been just one, but very successful, aspect of that and it was great to have him come to the club to congratulate our very worthy cup winners.”
