Rishi met the team behind Northallerton's Forum community venue and heard about the plans to celebrate its 50th anniversary.
The Forum became a volunteer-run venue after the former Hambleton District Council transferred ownership in 2012. Since then, a dedicated team of trustees and volunteers has kept the centre alive, hosting a wide range of community events and performances.
During the visit he met trustees, management, volunteers and Deborah Munton, chair of the venue's trustees
Ms Munton outlined to Rishi the proposals for the £140,000 refurbishment of the much-loved community venue.
The planned works include improvements to seating, lighting, and toilet facilities, alongside the installation of automatic doors to enhance accessibility.
A ‘JustGiving’ page has been set up to support the Forum in its refurbishment plans.
Rishi was introduced to several of The Forum’s dedicated volunteers and heard first-hand about the important role the venue plays in the community, as well as plans for a series of events to mark it’s 50th anniversary.
Events include a 50th anniversary plaque unveiling as well as a ‘Forum at Fifty’ celebration, where local entertainers who have previously performed at the Forum are coming together for a variety show on Saturday 27th September.
Speaking after the visit, Rishi said:
"The Forum is a fantastic community asset that my family and I have enjoyed visiting on many occasions. It’s thanks to the hard work and dedication of the volunteers, trustees and staff that The Forum continues to thrive and serve the local community so well”.
“I’m very grateful to everyone involved and wish them every success as they embark on these exciting refurbishment plans and prepare for their 50th anniversary celebrations."
Deborah Munton said “Our 50th anniversary is an important milestone, and I was delighted that Rishi Sunak could join us to meet staff, volunteers and board members”
“We were able to share with him our plans to celebrate this special year, as well as update him on our fundraising plans for a refurbishment programme”
“We all appreciated the time he spent with us, and the support he gives to The Forum.”
