Keen pupils at Bedale High School put their local MP on the spot.

A Year 9 citizenship class had a wide range of questions for Rishi Sunak, the MP for Richmond.

They included Brexit, immigration, the voting age, young people’s needs, why he entered politics, what he did before becoming an MP and what he enjoyed about his life in Westminster.

After his grilling, the MP said: “The pupils were really bright and engaged and asked me a lot of pertinent questions about my life as MP, both in London and here in the constituency.”

Before his Q&A session with the citizenship class, which is normally taken by the school’s headteacher Tony Rawdin, Mr Sunak addressed an assembly of Year 9 and 10 pupils.

He also had a discussion with Mr Rawdin, Gerry Price, the chair of governors, and representatives from the local business group Brand Bedale about the school’s growing links with the business community and its initiatives to prepare pupils for the world of work and apprenticeships.
